An opportunity to learn and practise, on unembalmed adult cadavers, the steps of a defined set of operative procedures which are relevant to both paediatric and general surgical training. The course is held in the College’s state-of-the-art training facilities and participants will also have ample opportunity to become familiar with the use of the ultrasonic (harmonic) scalpel.

The course will cover the wide range of procedures which are highly relevant for both paediatric and general surgeons, namely:

  • Revision of laparoscopic suturing and knot tying
  • Safe port insertion
  • Hiatal dissection
  • Heller’s cardiomyotomy
  • Fundoplication
  • Division of short gastric vessels
  • Right hemicolectomy & stapled ileocolic anastomosis
  • Left hemicolectomy and splenic flexure mobilisation
  • Rectal dissection and stapled ileorectal anastomosis

By the end of the course the participants will be able to:

  • outline the detailed anatomical knowledge necessary for laparoscopic procedures
  • describe the indications, patient selection criteria, risks and benefits of paediatric and adult laparoscopic G.I procedures
  • describe the operative steps of a range of paediatric and adult laparoscopic upper and lower G.I procedures and carry them out ergonomically
  • identify and explain the differences between children and adults which impact upon operative technique
  • use common energy sources safely
  • perform a range of laparoscopic dissection techniques
  • operate laparoscopic stapling devices safely
  • identify common operative pitfalls and develop strategies to avoid them
