This highly interactive course offers training in the practical skills of scientific writing and you will learn how to put together a paper and clearly convey a message.  The course focuses on those basic skills common to all published work that can make the difference between acceptance and rejection and getting your work into print.  This one day course was originally developed by Professor Derek Alderson in conjunction with the editors of the British Journal of Surgery (BJS).  The present course represents a collaboration between the Royal College of Surgeons and the British Journal of Surgery Society.

Issues covered may include:

  • Discuss the benefits of publishing a surgical paper
  • Be able to outline the methods of publishing a paper
  • Be able to organise your ideas in to a scientific format
  • Be able to create a title from an abstract
  • Understand the need for organisation of various aspects such as time and materials
  • Structure writing in different sections
  • Be able to write accurate methods and the start of the results from an abstract
  • Be able to devise relevant sentences for an introduction
  • Be able to devise relevant sentences for use in the discussion
  • Understand the steps needed to write a relevant abstract
  • Write a structured abstract from an article
  • Be able to determine rules of authorship
  • Be able to review and then revise text identifying errors
  • Have gained an increase in confidence in order to produce and submit a Surgical Paper
