British Association of Paediatric Surgeons

HUGH GREENWOOD TRAVELLING FELLOWSHIP 2009 Fellowship report by Dr. R. P. Chaudhary

 INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND

This fellowship was organized through BAPS  and was intended to provide an opportunity to the young Paediatric Surgeons of the developing country to have an overseas exposure to UK for 2-3 months so that Paediatric Surgical services of the recipient’s centre could be improved.

This fellowship provides £ 3000 for the purpose of travel, accommodation and foods.

I really feel honored to be the 2nd recipient from the SAARC region (South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation).

 THE FELLOWSHIP

I was accepted by  Mr. Mervyn Griffiths, Consultant Paediatric Surgeon, Southhampton University Hospitals, Mr. Devesh Misra, Consultant Paediatric Surgeon, Barts & The Royal London Hospital, London and Mrs. Sian Falder, Consultant Burn Plastic Surgeon, Alder Hey Children Hospital, Liverpool for the fellowship.

I started my fellowship from 29th March till 28th June with one month each in Southampton General Hospital followed by in The Royal Lodon Hospital and finally in Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.

I was as a visiting observer due to lack of registration with GMC.

MAIN ACTIVITIES DURING FELLOWSHIP

During the period of my fellowship, I participated in ward round, theatre as well as clinics. I really had an excellent exposure in Paediatric urology, Paediatric Laparoscopic Surgery, General Paediatric Surgery and in Paediatric burns because I deal all sort of Paediatric surgical problems including burns in my hospital except laparoscopic surgery.

In spite of my observer status, often I was kept actively involved in clinical discussions and my opinions in decision makings, which I really liked.

I could learn better management of Paediatric Urology, Paediatric Laparoscopic Surgery and Paediatric burn during this fellowship.

It was really a great opportunity to meet other professionals. This provided me with golden opportunities for future link up and exchange programs.

OTHER ASPECT OF THE FELLOWSHIP

I was fortunate to have the opportunities to attend following conferences and meetings during the period of fellowship.

·        Simpson Smith Symposium at Institute of Child Health, London

·        International Meeting on Hypospadiac Surgery, Coventry

·        Management of Burn , Alder Hey Children’s  Hospital, Liverpool

·        16th International colorectal meeting, Graz, Austria

·        1st BAPS – EUPSA meeting, Graz, Austria .

I visited Great Ormond Children’s Hospital, London for one week and   attended the grand ward round and the theatres. I am grateful to Prof. Augustino Pierro, Mr. David Drake, Mr. Edward Kiely and Mr. Curry for their kind attention.

I had opportunities to stay with consultants’ family and to participate in sponsored walk in Liverpool to raise fund for my hospital, so I really had perfect social aspect as well.

CONCLUSION

I am indebted to Mr Greenwood and BAPS for my selection for Hugh Greenwood fellowship and hence providing me the opportunities.

I am eternally grateful to Mr. Mervyn Griffiths for organising virtually everything for my fellowship. I really appreciate his best efforts.

I would like to express my sincere thanks to Mr. Devesh Misra, Mr. Simon Kenny, Mr. Nial Jones, Mrs Sian Falder, Dr. Barry Pizer and  Miss Carmel Dersch for their supports in various ways without which I would have faced lots of difficulties.

I would like to thank all others also, whose names aren’t mentioned here but  helped and supported me in various ways.

I am sure that the experience and knowledge acquired during my fellowship in UK would definitely help to improve the care of Nepalese kids and would also help to establish future links as well as opportunities for exchange programmes with UK centres for further improvements.

I would like to invite you all to visit our beautiful country Nepal and to our hospital. You all are welcome.
