This course aims to develop a trainee’s surgical skills focusing on the management of a number of neonatal and infant conditions.  The course uses animal tissue models for bowel anastomosis and plastic jigs are used for a PUJ obstruction and and OA/TOF repair.

The provisional programme is as follows:

0845-0930 Faculty Meeting and Pre-Course Workshop Familiarisation

0930-1000 Registration and Refreshments

1000-1030 Introduction followed by General Principle; Tissue handling, sutures, methods, etc ; Using loupes ; Bowel anastomosis demonstration

1030-1200 Bowel Anastomosis Practical workshop using Pig intestine (Tea and Coffee will be served in 4FRA during this session)

1200-1300 Stamm Gastrostomy and Pyloromyotomy; Demonstration; Practical workshop

1300-1400 Lunch

1400-1445 Neonatal Bowel Anastomosis (Atresia); Small bowel atresia demonstration using pig intestine; Practical workshop

1445-1545 Duodenal Atresia; Duodenal atresia: demonstration; Duodenal atresia: practical workshop, animal tissue

1545-1600 Refreshments

1600-1715 NEC; Laparotomy; Options, bowel resection; Ileostomy demonstration; Practical workshop, animal tissue

1715-1745 Discussion
