It’s my privilege to stand for election as I passionately believe in our organisation and wish to support you as my colleagues. BAPS primary aim is to provide the highest standard of care for our patients achieved through quality postgraduate surgical training programmes and research. We cannot achieve these aims independently but by collaboration with the NHS, all the surgical colleges of Great Britain & Ireland and our national inspection authorities. We also need to support and work with our adult surgical and paediatric colleagues to ensure the highest quality provision of children’s surgery nationwide.

The experience I have gained during the last 10 years as an executive member & Hon secretary has given me first hand knowledge of how our organisation functions and allowed me to make valuable personal contacts. As your SAS rep with the RCS of England I have been given additional access to ‘movers & shakers’ within the health service and am currently advising NHS England in their national review of specialist children’s surgery in England. As BAPS liaison I have assisted regional and national inspection agencies in addition to developing metrics to be incorporated into future CQC inspections. Lastly my role as chair of the Children’s Surgical Forum gives me links with all the speciality associations and a forum that is effective in influencing national commissioning.

To achieve the best for our patients and be most effective we need to work together both locally, nationally and internationally. As BAPS President I will promote effective networking and means by which our organisation can assist you as consultants. I recognise everyone is under pressure in today’s NHS & BAPS is there to support you.

It would be an honour to be elected as your President.

Richard Stewart

Richard’s proposer is Bharat More (Nottingham) and his seconder is Ashish Minocha (Norwich).
