Advancing paediatric surgery through education and research

Charles JH Stolar – Pioneer in “Gentle Ventilation” receives Robert Gross Award 2022

APSA has announced this year’s Robert E Gross Award in Pediatric Research as Charles JH Stolar. He is a senior paediatric surgeon, formerly based in New York and now in California, who  in the words of the citation: “ for contributions to the care of patients with congenital diaphragmatic hernia have been recognized throughout our field, and have significantly impacted the care of these infants. He and his colleagues were the first to develop and describe a novel strategy for management of congenital diaphragmatic hernia, based on the principle of avoiding lung injury and optimizing neonatal physiology. This work was conducted over an approximate 30 year span and its evolution is reflected in more than 40 publications over the time period. This provides a paradigm for the development of clinical practices based on the meticulous observation of physiology in the neonate.”
