Advancing paediatric surgery through education and research

Haidar Mohammad Muhssein

Scholarship: 2016 BAPS Travelling Scholarship

Current Position: Pediatric Surgeon, Deputy Head of Medical Education Unit, Kufa University, College of Medicine, Najaf, Iraq.

Biography: I am a pediatric surgeon practicing in Najaf, Iraq, since January 2008. I am board certified in pediatric surgery from the Iraqi board of Medical Specializations. I am doing children’s surgery with an interest in colorectal and pediatric surgical oncology. Also, I have worked in the medical education unit since October 2012, being the deputy head of that unit from October 2013 until now. I am responsible for the management and delivery of the undergraduate medical curriculum in addition to teaching and research responsibilities.

I was selected in 2016 to receive one of the BAPS travelling scholarships as a candidate from Iraq. It was a fantastic opportunity for me to attend the 63rd International Congress of BAPS in Amsterdam, which was a highly valuable and updated congress in pediatric surgery containing a variety of educational contents like free papers, symposia, posters and keynote lectures. The information gained has had a high impact on my professional practice, which is reflected in my patient care.  In addition, it was a good networking opportunity and international collaboration with other pediatric surgeons worldwide, exchanging information and ideas among us. I had active involvement in the congress in the form of poster and oral presentations at the international forum meeting.
